As a recording artist, when I go to the studio I can’t afford wasting time, because time is money. Most of the times when you record in such a hurry and pressure you forget to enjoy the moment, to feel the music and give in. Working with Marlon was the perfect blend of the two. It wasn’t working with Marlon… we were having fun; without noticing, I recorded twice as fast as I usually do. Ever since I first worked with him I must have Marlon in every session because I know it will turn into success. This man just gets the very best out of me.

I will feel forever indebted to Marlon for all that he has done for me! When I was a student at Berklee, he was the first person that I felt really believed in me, and it was in his classes that I felt the most connected to myself as a singer. After graduation I continued to take private lessons with Marlon where we worked not only on technique, endurance, and range, but also on interpretation and improvisation. He was able to take me farther than I ever thought I could go as a singer, and I know that it was because of Marlon’s guidance that I was able to grow as a vocalist and an artist.

While I attended Berklee College of Music, I received private lessons and took background vocal classes (2005-2007) from Professor Marlon Saunders. Through his courses, he introduced me to many diverse genres of music including Traditional, Negro Spirituals, Gospel, Rock, Soul, Disco, Funk, R&B, Jazz and many more sounds. He taught me to sing these different genres and to interpret them in my own style and to express the songs in my own distinct color. Most importantly, Marlon taught me the meaning of putting soul into my music. He became the bridge between art and my spirit. 버클리 음악대학교 재학 시절, 저는 2005년부터 2007년까지 말론 사운더스 교수님께서 지도하시는 개인 레슨과 백그라운드 보컬 수업을 들을 수 있는 좋은 기회를 얻었습니다.

Having Marlon as my voice teacher changed my life! His musical range and knowledge were a perfect fit for my versatility. His positivity guided me through the hurdles of transitioning from a college student to a singer in the real world. Every week I would look at Marlon like he was crazy for at least one of the four songs he assigned me (one each for jazz, r&b, classical, and musical theatre). From "Four Brothers" to "I Loves You Porgy," Marlon challenged me to expect nothing short of the absolute best of myself and then some. With that confidence and knowledge (and still using some songs assigned by Marlon) I've gone on to work for Walt Disney Entertainment, two Broadway shows (Avenue Q, Finian's Rainbow), as a studio singer, and appeared as a singing nurse on FX's "Rescue Me." Marlon will challenge and mature you as a musician, but he will also touch your life and your soul forever changing your perspective as a performer. That's definitely what he did for me.

Marlon is the best! Every lesson I have with Marlon, I walk away with results and tangible tools to work with. Each lesson is filled with moments of discovery, release, and encouragement. Marlon focuses on every aspect of what makes the voice soar, including the mind, body, and spirit connection. Not only have I experienced vocal freedom through Marlon’s teaching but I have also experienced vocal recovery. Three years ago I had an accident that almost cost me my voice. I had to go through surgery and 9 months of therapy. It is a miracle that I can sing and talk today. When I came through the surgery my singing and talking voice was recovered, except I had lost several notes on both ends of my range. I didn’t know if I could ever get them back and as a professional singer, this was devastating. When I started training with Marlon again in Los Angeles, we worked to piece my voice back together. Note by note, through technique and diligence my voice started to repair. And now it is soaring!! I can do things that I couldn’t even do before the accident! Marlon is a truly gifted coach and has blessed not only my voice but also my life in countless ways.

Marlon's lessons are a soul journey. Through his lessons, Marlon opens a door to your soul and teaches you how to sing from that space. That's why Marlon is not simply a singing teacher/coach, he is a healer as well and a lesson with Marlon is truly a healing experience. As an outstanding singer/ performer, Marlon understands how to meet you where you are and lead you on your own path to where you need to go. Marlon has taught me how to sing better than I ever imagined I could. More important than that, my experience with Marlon has significantly changed my life in the most positive way. |
